Commanders Named Trade Destination for Potential $70 Million WR
Washington Commanders Could Target Garrett Wilson in Trade for a Major Offensive Boost
The Washington Commanders are gearing up for a significant offseason, with around $101.3 million in salary cap space and coming off a surprising postseason appearance.
This sets them up to make serious moves, especially in the wide receiver market, where they are seeking a dynamic playmaker to complement Terry McLaurin and catch passes from the emerging star quarterback, Jayden Daniels.
While the Commanders could explore free agency to bolster their receiving corps, they may also look to make a bold trade.
According to Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay, Washington is listed as a potential trade destination for Garrett Wilson, the New York Jets’ disgruntled wide receiver.
The 24-year-old Wilson has already proven himself as one of the NFL’s most dynamic talents, surpassing 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first three seasons, despite playing for a team with a subpar record.
His consistent performance stands out, especially given the Jets’ struggles.
Tensions between Wilson and Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers have been brewing since training camp, where a heated argument seemed to spark discord.
The situation worsened when the Jets traded for Rodgers’ former top target, wide receiver Davante Adams. While Wilson hasn’t spoken out publicly about his frustrations, insiders believe he is dissatisfied with the lack of attention from Rodgers, especially when film analysis shows that he is often open but not receiving the ball.
This strained relationship has further complicated Wilson’s future in New York, particularly as the Jets are likely to miss the playoffs once again.
Wilson was drafted by the Jets as the No. 10 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft after an impressive college career at Ohio State. In his rookie season, he was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after recording 1,103 receiving yards.
His potential market value is substantial, with projections estimating a contract extension in the range of three years and $70.3 million, possibly rising to $122 million over five years for a long-term deal.
For the Commanders to acquire Wilson, they would face two key hurdles: the cost of a trade and the financial commitment to his future.
Looking at a similar trade in recent NFL history, the Tennessee Titans traded star receiver A.J. Brown to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a first and third-round pick in the 2022 draft.
The Commanders might face a comparable price to acquire Wilson, although they could potentially negotiate a lower draft pick for the trade.
With the chance to secure a top-tier wide receiver to elevate their offense, the Washington Commanders are in an intriguing position to make a bold move this offseason, potentially reshaping their receiving game for the years to come.
