A tragic plane crash claimed the lives of two individuals in rural Boone County, Illinois, on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities responded to the scene near the intersection of Capron Road and Blaine Road in the town of Capron after receiving a report just after 3 p.m.
A local farmer initially noticed something unusual—discolored crops in a section of his field—which led to the discovery of the downed aircraft.
Upon arrival, Boone County deputies located a Vans RV-10, a small, single-engine airplane, that had crashed in the area. Sadly, both occupants of the plane were found deceased at the site.
Officials confirmed that no one survived the impact, and no additional injuries or property damage in the surrounding area were reported.
As the incident falls under federal aviation jurisdiction, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will lead the investigation into what caused the crash.
The process will involve examining the wreckage, reviewing flight records, and interviewing any available witnesses or nearby air traffic controllers to understand the flight’s origin, destination, and potential mechanical or environmental factors involved..Boone County Sheriff Scott Yunk offered a brief statement about the incident, noting that while the area does see frequent use of its small regional airport by light aircraft, accidents like this are rare.
“We do have a pretty busy airport for smaller aircraft… but this doesn’t happen too often,” Sheriff Yunk remarked. His comments reflect the shock and sadness felt in the community after the unexpected tragedy. At this time, authorities have not released the names of the victims, and it remains unclear where the aircraft had taken off from or what its flight path was.
- As the FAA and NTSB continue their investigation, more information is expected in the coming days. Local officials are asking anyone with knowledge of the flight or who may have seen the aircraft before the crash to come forward.
