The Boston Red Sox have reportedly made a tough roster decision to create a spot for Masataka Yoshida, who is set to return from the 60-day injured list on Wednesday.
To accommodate the slugger’s comeback, the team has reportedly demoted outfielder and third baseman Nate Eaton to Triple-A Worcester.
This move comes after the Red Sox’s dominant 10-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night, as reported by Chris Cotillo of MassLive.
Eaton’s performance in the game saw him go 0-for-3 with a strikeout while batting lead-off before being replaced at third base by Marcelo Mayer.
This outing brought his overall batting line to .250/.296/.333. The 28-year-old will now rejoin the Worcester team, where he spent a significant portion of the first half of the season.
He was called up to the major league roster following the Rafael Devers trade in mid-June and subsequently appeared in 14 of Boston’s last 19 games.
Despite hitting safely in three of his last four games and offering valuable speed and defensive versatility, a roster adjustment was necessary to make room for Yoshida.
Unfortunately for Eaton, he was ultimately identified as the player who would be sent down.
This kind of decision is common in professional sports, where teams often have to make difficult choices to optimize their roster for performance, especially when key players return from injury.
Yoshida, who has yet to play for Boston this season after undergoing offseason shoulder surgery last fall, recently completed a five-game rehab assignment.
In preparation for his anticipated return, he has been working out with the Red Sox over the past few days.
With Eaton’s move, Yoshida is expected to be activated from the injured list on Wednesday and is set to make his long-awaited season debut in the series finale against the Rockies.
This will provide him with several games to regain his rhythm before the All-Star Break, a crucial period for him to get back into game shape.
