Early in the morning of November 20, 2025, social media exploded with a post claiming that Niagara Falls had dramatically turned a deep red — “like blood” — for about ten minutes. According to the story, visitors were stunned at around 5:36 a.m., when the iconic Horseshoe Falls allegedly shifted from its usual clear torrent into a surreal crimson cascade.
Witnesses reportedly said even the mist seemed dyed red, and a tourist, “Elena Torres” from Mexico, was quoted describing it as a horror-movie moment: people screaming, filming, and in disbelief.
The post went into more detail, suggesting environmental experts were baffled. It referenced a hydrologist, “Dr. Rebecca Thompson,” who supposedly said she had “never seen anything like this,” and implied possible causes, such as a dye experiment or even a publicity stunt. Cleanup crews and drones were said to have been dispatched, yet the post claimed no signs of long-term pollution.
However, fact-checking organizations strongly dispute the entire scenario. Lead Stories investigated and concluded that the image is fake. According to them, the post originated from a Facebook page that regularly shares AI-generated or otherwise fabricated content — making it very likely this was not a real event.
Authorities backed this up. A spokesperson for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation told Lead Stories that the red-water story and image are “not authentic.” Niagara Falls Tourism also denied that the waters ever turned red, noting that while heavy rains can sometimes discolor the water (making it brown), it never turns bright red.
