Sioux City Approves New Solid Waste Collection Rates for 2025

Sioux City residents will see changes in their solid waste collection fees starting July 1, 2025, following the City Council’s recent decision to approve new rates.

The measure was passed unanimously with a 5-0 vote, adjusting fees for garbage collection, recycling, and waste disposal under the city’s contract with Gill Hauling.

According to Utilities Director Tom Pingel, the contract includes an annual rate adjustment ranging from 3% to 5%, based on the Midwest Consumer Price Index (CPI).

This year, the CPI increase stands at 3%, prompting the following updates: a 95-gallon tote will rise from $17.85 to $18.38, and a 65-gallon tote will increase from $16.50 to $17.00.

The fee for an extra container will move up from $4.37 to $4.50, while the cost of a solid waste sticker remains unchanged at $1.50.

City officials emphasized that these adjustments are necessary to keep up with inflation and ensure continued waste management services.

The agreement with Gill Hauling ensures that annual rate modifications align with economic trends, helping the city maintain efficient collection and disposal operations without compromising service quality.

For residents, the new rates mean a slight increase in monthly utility bills, but city leaders believe the adjustments are reasonable given the rising costs of waste management.

Officials encourage residents to stay informed about waste collection policies and consider ways to reduce household waste to manage costs effectively.

The updated rates will officially take effect on July 1, 2025, and residents are advised to plan accordingly.

The city continues to explore ways to improve waste management services while balancing affordability for households in Sioux City.
