Brent Venables: More Bad News for Oklahoma WR Deion Burks

Oklahoma wide receiver Deion Burks is facing a series of unfortunate events after a tough loss to Missouri on November 9, 2024.

Burks, who had already missed five games earlier in the season due to injury, appeared to have suffered another setback during the Sooners’ 30-23 defeat.

Late in the game, with just 19 seconds remaining, Burks took a hard hit on a 5-yard reception, sandwiching him between two defenders.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables confirmed that Burks was being evaluated for a potential concussion following the hit, leaving his status uncertain.

However, the bad news didn’t stop there. Venables shared another heartbreaking detail during his postgame comments, revealing that Burks’ family had experienced a devastating loss.

The wide receiver learned that his parents’ home had been destroyed in a fire. Venables expressed his sympathy, saying, “Just real tragic.

So our prayers are out to him and his family.” Burks later shared a photo on his Instagram story showing the burnt remnants of the house, making the tragedy even more personal for his supporters and teammates.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Burks has been a key contributor to the Sooners’ offense this season.

In the five games he’s played, he has caught 31 passes, leads the team with three touchdown receptions, and ranks third in receiving yards with 245.

Before the season, Burks transferred to Oklahoma from Purdue, where he quickly became a standout, showcasing his talents during the Red/White Game with impressive performances that included five catches for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

In addition to his on-field performance, Burks has been involved in community efforts through his NIL deal with Rob’s Ranch, a local rehabilitation organization.

For every catch he makes this season, Burks has committed to donating $50 to the cause, a commitment that has been supported by numerous local businesses.

This story will continue to evolve as more details emerge about Burks’ recovery and the situation with his family.

Despite the challenges, it’s clear that Burks has shown immense resilience, and both the Sooners’ coaching staff and fans are rallying behind him during this incredibly

tough time.
