Many travelers know the importance of being careful about drinking tap water while on vacation, especially in places where water quality is uncertain. The thought of getting sick on a long-awaited trip is enough to make anyone question what’s safe to drink. That same concern often comes up at sea, where passengers wonder whether the tap water onboard cruise ships is truly safe. Since bottled water usually isn’t free on most ships, many guests end up relying on tap water during their voyage. This has left plenty of people asking the same question: Is cruise ship water safe to drink?
Carnival Cruise Line’s brand ambassador, John Heald, receives these kinds of questions regularly from his large online community of cruisers. Recently, he addressed the topic again after a worried traveler reached out. The passenger shared that a coworker had fallen ill during a stay at a land-based resort, which sparked new concerns about drinking water during cruises. Hearing that an entire family became sick while on vacation led the cruiser to wonder whether water taken onboard from certain island destinations could pose similar risks.
In response, Heald chose to publicly address the concern, sharing the message on his Facebook page to help reassure other travelers who may have quietly wondered the same thing. He explained that Carnival sources the majority of its drinking water directly from U.S. home ports—where water quality is thoroughly regulated. On rare occasions when additional water must be taken on in other countries, the supply must still meet strict sanitation requirements enforced under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vessel Sanitation Program. This ensures that any water used onboard aligns with U.S. public health standards.
Heald emphasized that the water delivered to passengers on Carnival ships goes through rigorous checks to verify its safety. Whether taken from U.S. ports or vetted international locations, the water is tested multiple times to ensure it meets the highest standards. However, he did acknowledge that once travelers leave the ship to explore ports of call, the same guarantee cannot be extended. For that reason, bottled water is often the safest option when touring different destinations during a cruise.
Despite these broader precautions, Heald reassured guests that the water onboard Carnival ships is entirely safe to drink. He encouraged travelers not to worry about tap water quality while sailing, as the cruise line follows strict guidelines to maintain passenger health. For those venturing ashore, he offered the simple advice of choosing bottled water—just to be safe—while reminding everyone that the ship’s water supply itself poses no issue.
