Chicago Cubs encouraged to pursue $174 million power hitter rather than chase Juan Soto

The Chicago Cubs fell short of their ambitions following an eventful offseason in 2024,

and they are now gearing up for an active free agency period aimed at securing the National League Central title.

As they assess their roster, there is a growing sentiment among analysts, including FanSided’s Zach Pressnell,

that the Cubs should prioritize acquiring Pete Alonso from the New York Mets instead of pursuing star outfielder Juan Soto.

Throughout the season, it became clear that the Cubs required a formidable slugger to enhance their lineup,

alongside a reliable everyday first baseman. Alonso, a key player for the Mets, emerged as a strong target for Chicago at the trade deadline

, but the Mets decided to retain him due to their competitive standing.

Pressnell notes that Alonso’s presence would significantly bolster the Cubs’ offensive capabilities, filling a crucial gap in their roster.

Although Alonso is expected to command a hefty contract, the Cubs possess the financial resources to make a competitive offer.

Reports indicate that he rejected a substantial seven-year extension worth $158 million last summer, with projections suggesting he could secure a six-year deal worth around $174 million this offseason.

Given the current market dynamics, the Cubs seem well-positioned to make a strong play for Alonso.

Despite Alonso’s impressive skills, there’s skepticism regarding whether any team would choose him over Soto,

especially with the Mets likely to pursue Soto aggressively. While the Cubs can compete with teams like the Mets and Yankees financially, it remains uncertain if Soto would have any interest in joining the Cubs.

This places the Cubs in a challenging position as they weigh their options in the coming months.

As the Cubs prepare for the offseason, focusing their efforts on securing Alonso might be the more strategic move. With the right additions, they could enhance their roster significantly and push for success in the upcoming season. The potential of adding a player like Alonso could be the catalyst the Cubs need to elevate their performance and contend in a competitive league.
