Chicago Cubs Linked To Power-Hitting Veteran Catcher in MLB Free Agency

As the Chicago Cubs look to enhance their roster this offseason, one position they are particularly focused on upgrading is catcher.

While it may be unrealistic to target a marquee superstar for the role, the Cubs are expected to pursue a more experienced option to platoon with Miguel Amaya.

In his first full season in the majors, Amaya played 117 games and posted a .232 batting average, along with 8 home runs and 47 RBIs.

Though he showed promise, the Cubs are eager to improve the position, and acquiring a reliable veteran behind the plate seems likely.

One potential candidate that has emerged is Kyle Higashioka, a veteran catcher most recently with the San Diego Padres.

Higashioka, 34, began the 2024 season as a backup to Luis Campusano but eventually earned a starting role due to his strong offensive performance.

He posted career-best numbers, including 17 home runs and 45 RBIs in just 84 games.

His batting line of .220/.263/.476 may not jump off the page, but his power potential is undeniable, and he could bring much-needed pop to the Cubs’ lineup in a platoon role with Amaya.

While Higashioka has never played more than 100 games in a season, this would not be a concern for Chicago, as they would likely utilize him in a part-time capacity.

His ability to contribute offensively in limited appearances makes him an ideal candidate to complement Amaya and provide additional depth at the position.

Moreover, Higashioka would come at a significantly lower cost compared to other available options. While Travis d’Arnaud signed a deal with the Los Angeles Angels worth $6 million annually, Higashioka is expected to sign for a much more affordable price, with estimates suggesting a one-year deal valued under $2 million.

If Higashioka can replicate the success he had in 2024, he could prove to be a bargain for the Cubs. His power, combined with his affordability, makes him an intriguing option as the Cubs continue their search for a catcher this offseason. With the need for a new catcher becoming more pressing, it seems likely that Higashioka will be a name to watch as free agency progresses.
