Chiefs may have lost vital piece for the season
kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes faced a challenging moment during his team’s Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on November 4, 2024,
when he reaggravated an ankle injury in the fourth quarter.
The injury occurred after Mahomes completed a crucial touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine, which tied the game at 17-17.
Mahomes appeared to step awkwardly and required assistance from trainers to exit the field,
but after a brief stint in the medical tent, he was able to return to the game without missing any offensive snaps.
Despite the scare, Mahomes showed his resilience.
He admitted the injury was concerning, especially since it was the same ankle he had hurt just the week before.
“Definitely scary,” Mahomes remarked, explaining that the pain was intensified because of the prior injury.
However, after some time to recover and receive treatment, Mahomes felt well enough to rejoin the action.
His return was met with cheers from the Arrowhead Stadium crowd, and he finished the game with an impressive stat line: 34 completions on 44 attempts, 291 yards, and 3 touchdowns, leading the Chiefs to a 30-24 overtime win.
The Chiefs’ star quarterback noted that the injury, although painful, didn’t negatively affect his performance as much as it could have.
“It hurts — the ankle injury — but sometimes it almost settles me down, especially in the pocket when I can’t use my mobility,” Mahomes explained.
He admitted that earlier in the game, he had struggled with the pass rush, but the injury forced him to focus on staying in the pocket and reading the defense more effectively.
Mahomes’ ability to adapt to the situation ultimately helped him lead his team to victory.
Mahomes’ ability to push through the pain also showed his commitment to the team’s success. Reflecting on his return to the game, Mahomes recalled his conversation with head coach Andy Reid, who jokingly suggested Mahomes would be out for the rest of the game. “I thought he was joking,” Mahomes said, laughing at the comment. But after passing the necessary tests, Mahomes was cleared to return and continued to perform at a high level.
This victory, which extended the Chiefs’ undefeated streak to 8-0 for the season, further solidified Mahomes’ reputation as one of the most resilient quarterbacks in the NFL. The injury scare aside, his leadership and ability to adjust under pressure were crucial in securing the win. As the Chiefs look ahead to the rest of the season, Mahomes’ health and performance will continue to be key factors in their pursuit of another championship.
