Detroit Lions injury update: Another defensive lineman out for the season
This week’s injury report for the Detroit Lions came with some tough news, particularly for their defense.
During a rare Saturday press conference, Lions head coach Dan Campbell shared updates on the team’s injured players,
following their Thanksgiving Day game and ahead of their upcoming matchup with the Green Bay Packers.
This week’s schedule has certainly been more unconventional, but Campbell’s update brought clarity to some of the more concerning injuries, particularly in the defensive line.
Campbell first confirmed the season-ending injury to linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who had been playing a pivotal role in the defense despite earlier injuries, sustained a knee injury on Thursday.
The loss is particularly significant given his contributions both as a starter and on special teams.
Campbell expressed disappointment but also optimism for Rodriguez’s future recovery. “It’s tough to lose him, especially with how well he was playing, but he’ll be ready to go next season,” Campbell remarked.
Another blow to the defensive line was the news that rookie Mekhi Wingo would also be out for the rest of the season.
Wingo suffered a knee injury on Thursday, and though he briefly returned to the field, it was soon clear that surgery would be necessary. Campbell was sympathetic to the young player’s situation but reassured that Wingo’s injury was one that could be fixed, allowing him to make a full recovery before the next season.
The injury report also included updates on defensive linemen Josh Paschal and Levi Onwuzurike, both of whom were hurt during the Thanksgiving game. While their conditions are more day-to-day, Campbell seemed less optimistic about their availability for the upcoming game against the Packers. Although Paschal may have a better chance of returning sooner, both players’ statuses remain uncertain.
Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, who was a surprise scratch from Thursday’s game, seemed to be progressing well in his recovery. He had a minor setback during pre-game warmups but is expected to be ready for the next matchup. Moseley’s recent injury history made the team cautious, but Campbell noted that it wasn’t a serious issue. Similarly, cornerback Carlton Davis, who missed the game against the Bears due to a knee injury and a broken thumb, is listed as day-to-day and questionable for the game next week.
These injuries will certainly affect the Lions as they head into a crucial part of the season. While the team faces these setbacks, there is hope that many of the injured players will recover and be ready for the next year. For now, the Lions must focus on the present and prepare for the challenges of their upcoming games while managing these key injuries.
