Matt Eberflus’ Replacement as Bears Head Coach is Clear Following Latest Report

Matt Eberflus, the head coach of the Chicago Bears, finds his position precarious as the team continues its search for a winning season.

Since the Bears last finished above .500 in 2018, the franchise has struggled to find consistent success. Currently,

they hold a 4-3 record heading into Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals, suggesting a possible turnaround with projections of a 10-win season if they can maintain their performance.

However, the second half of the season could present significant challenges, as the Bears have one of the toughest remaining schedules,

with their upcoming opponents averaging a 63.2% win rate, making playoff aspirations a steep hill to climb.

Should the Bears falter in their pursuit of postseason play, Eberflus may face dismissal, raising questions about who could take the helm if changes are made.

Recent discussions have centered around potential successors, with a particular focus on Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.

According to NFL insider Albert Breer, Johnson expressed interest in the Bears coaching position last season but ultimately decided to remain in Detroit when the Bears opted to retain Eberflus.

Johnson’s influence has been undeniable in revitalizing the Lions’ offense, transforming it into one of the league’s most formidable units.

After joining the Lions in 2019 as an offensive quality control coach, he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the offensive coordinator prior to the 2022 season.

Under his guidance, the Lions not only finished among the top-scoring teams in 2022 and 2023 but have also excelled this year, averaging a remarkable 33.4 points per game.

In contrast, the Bears’ offensive performance has lagged behind, ranking 23rd, 18th, and 16th over the same periods.

While Johnson has yet to step into an NFL head coaching role, his strategic prowess could be just what the Bears need to elevate their performance and finally break their postseason drought, which has now extended for three years.

As the coaching landscape shifts, Johnson is poised to attract significant interest from various teams looking to fill head coach vacancies.

If the Bears do decide to part ways with Eberflus, it is likely that Johnson will be a prime candidate to lead the team.

However, the Bears may face stiff competition from other franchises eager to secure his talents. Should the Bears miss out on Johnson again, they may find themselves regretting the opportunity they let slip away during the last coaching cycle.
