Pittsburgh Steelers sign former Michigan State standout linebacker

Pittsburgh Steelers Reinstate Jacoby Windmon to Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a strategic move by re-signing linebacker Jacoby Windmon to their practice squad.

This decision comes in the wake of running back Aaron Shampklin’s promotion to the active 53-man roster, thus creating an opportunity for Windmon.

Currently, the Steelers’ practice squad consists of 17 players, and they still have one vacancy on their active roster.

Outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon is anticipated to fill this spot soon, as he has been designated to return from injured reserve.

Previously, Windmon was released as part of the team’s roster cuts to reach the 53-man limit.

Following his release, he attracted attention from various NFL teams, including the Seattle Seahawks, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers, all of which held workouts with him.

Windmon now joins veteran Devin Harper on the Steelers’ practice squad as an inside linebacker.

Throughout training camp, Windmon primarily played as an off-ball linebacker, but he is also capable of lining up as an outside linebacker.

A product of Michigan State, Windmon entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent after the 2024 NFL Draft.

At just 23 years old, he boasts impressive physical attributes, standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 240 pounds.

During his collegiate career, Windmon transferred to Michigan State from UNLV in 2022 and made a significant impact, accumulating 64 tackles and 6.5 sacks over two seasons in the competitive Big Ten Conference.

The Steelers have been proactive in adjusting their roster in response to injuries and performance issues. Windmon’s reinstatement reflects the team’s commitment to maintaining a robust linebacker corps as they navigate the season. His versatility and experience will provide valuable depth, especially as they work through various player injuries.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Windmon to see how he integrates back into the team and whether he can seize opportunities to contribute on the field. His previous training camp performance and potential to fill multiple linebacker roles may offer the Steelers a strategic advantage in upcoming games.

In addition to Windmon’s re-signing, the Steelers continue to manage their roster carefully, addressing needs as they arise. With the challenges of injuries and roster adjustments, having reliable players on the practice squad like Windmon could be crucial for the team’s success.

Fans are hopeful that this move will bolster the Steelers’ defense, which has shown promise but also has room for improvement. As they prepare for their next matchup, Windmon’s familiarity with the team’s system could enable him to make an immediate impact, whether called upon in special teams or as a defensive substitute.

Overall, Windmon’s return to the Steelers signifies a thoughtful approach to roster management and underscores the team’s commitment to strengthening their defensive lineup as they pursue their goals for the season. With a talented group of linebackers, including both seasoned veterans and promising young players, the Steelers aim to solidify their defensive strategy moving forward.
