Ravens Signs Steelers Cut Safety
The Pittsburgh Steelers recently made a notable move by releasing veteran safety Terrell Edmunds to create space on their 53-man roster.
This decision comes after Edmunds’ second stint with the team, which didn’t last a full season. His departure makes room for new players, including Tyler Matakevich and Ben Skowronek.
While the Steelers decided to part ways with Edmunds, there’s a possibility he could rejoin the practice squad if no other team claims him off waivers.
However, Edmunds’ recent injury report status may have played a role in the team’s decision, as they opted not to wait further on his recovery.
Edmunds, a former first-round pick from the 2018 NFL Draft, had shown potential early in his career with the Steelers.
He stepped up as a consistent contributor to the secondary, earning first-team reps and recording impressive stats, including 105 tackles and multiple pass defenses in 2019.
However, as time went on, his role with Pittsburgh diminished, especially after they decided not to pick up his fifth-year option in 2021.
Despite this, Edmunds remained with the Steelers until 2023, only to find himself on the move again. After a career that also included stints with the Eagles, Titans, and Jaguars, he’s now available as a free agent.
With over 400 career tackles, five sacks, and five interceptions, Edmunds still possesses valuable experience that could be appealing to teams looking to strengthen their secondary depth.
While he may no longer be a full-time starter, his veteran presence could provide critical leadership and stability to a secondary room in need of reinforcement.
Teams like the Baltimore Ravens and the Carolina Panthers could be in the market for a player like Edmunds to fill such a role.
The Ravens, in particular, are a team that could benefit from adding a player like Edmunds.
While their offense has been thriving, their defense, especially in the secondary, has had its struggles. In a recent narrow win against the Bengals, the Ravens allowed Joe Burrow to throw for over 400 yards and four touchdowns.
Although standout safety Kyle Hamilton remains a top performer, the Ravens could use a veteran presence like Edmunds to add depth and versatility to their defensive backfield. Marcus Williams has struggled with consistency, and Eddie Jackson has been more of a rotational piece, making Edmunds a potential short-term solution to bolster the unit.
On the other hand, the Carolina Panthers are a team in the midst of rebuilding. Although their 2024 season hasn’t gone as planned, with the offense faltering and the team struggling to find consistency, signing a veteran like Edmunds could serve as a smart move to shore up the secondary. While he might not immediately fix all the Panthers’ issues, his experience could provide valuable support to young players like Jaycee Horn and Xavier Woods. If Edmunds can regain some of his form from his peak years, he could easily step into a starting role and bring stability to a struggling defensive unit as the Panthers plan for the future.
Both the Ravens and the Panthers have their reasons to consider signing Terrell Edmunds. Whether it’s for immediate depth or as part of a longer-term strategy, his experience and leadership in the secondary could be the kind of asset these teams need as they continue their respective seasons.
