Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu has provided an encouraging update regarding his recovery from a calf injury that sidelined him nearly a month ago. The 24-year-old has been on the injured list since August 19 but is steadily progressing and closing in on a long-awaited return to action.
Abreu shared that he has already resumed hitting without any discomfort, while his running has also improved significantly.
Although he admitted he is still awaiting medical clearance from the team’s trainers, the outfielder suggested that next week could be a realistic target for stepping back onto the field. His optimism comes at a crucial time, as the Red Sox continue their push for the postseason.
Time, however, is becoming a factor. With Triple-A Worcester’s season ending on September 21, opportunities for Abreu to complete a minor league rehab assignment are dwindling.
Despite the setback, the young outfielder remains hopeful he can return in time to contribute to Boston’s playoff chase, even if it means a limited tune-up period before rejoining the big-league roster.
While Abreu is eager to return, he admitted the process has been more challenging than he expected. Initially, he believed the calf strain would not keep him out for long, but the injury has proven more stubborn.
It took a lot longer. I thought it wasn’t a big deal,” Abreu said. “But I’m focused on being healthy and one hundred percent next week and for the rest of the season. It’s very tough to not play and help the team, but I want to be ready to contribute down the stretch and hopefully in the playoffs.”
Red Sox manager Alex Cora echoed the cautious optimism, noting that the club is hopeful to activate Abreu as early as next week. Whether his return comes during the upcoming series against Oakland or Tampa Bay remains to be seen.
Before his injury, Abreu was hitting .253 with 22 home runs and 69 RBIs, production the Red Sox will be eager to get back as they fight to hold on to a wild card spot with an 81-68 record.
