The San Francisco 49ers went to great lengths this offseason to retain star linebacker Dre Greenlaw,
but ultimately, their efforts fell short. Despite making a competitive offer and even visiting Greenlaw at his home in Texas, the 27-year-old chose to sign a three-year, $35 million contract with the Denver Broncos.
According to The Denver Post, the 49ers not only matched but outbid Denver’s offer in an attempt to keep Greenlaw in San Francisco.
Reports indicate that 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan personally traveled to Texas to meet with Greenlaw, demonstrating just how much they valued him.
Sources suggest that the 49ers only increased their offer after learning of Denver’s strong interest in securing Greenlaw to bolster their defense.
This move highlighted San Francisco’s commitment to keeping their defensive core intact.
Even after Greenlaw had already reached an agreement with the Broncos, the 49ers made another attempt to bring him back.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that San Francisco tried to lure him away from Denver before his contract was finalized.
However, it became clear that Greenlaw was ready for a fresh start elsewhere.
After spending six seasons with the 49ers, Greenlaw now joins a formidable Broncos defense that includes his former San Francisco teammate, Talanoa Hufanga. His departure marks a significant change for the 49ers’ defense, raising questions about how the team will adjust moving forward.
While the 49ers did everything they could to keep Greenlaw, his decision to leave signals a new chapter in his career.
San Francisco will now have to shift focus toward reinforcing their defensive lineup as they prepare for the upcoming season.
