The San Diego culinary world is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Gianna Isabella Buzzetta, an immensely talented executive pastry chef who tragically passed away on March 24, 2025, at just 26 years old.

Gianna, who most recently showcased her craft at the Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie in Carlsbad, was a rising star whose creativity and passion left an enduring mark on those around her.

Her untimely passing occurred during a hiking excursion at Makaleha Falls Trail in Kapa‘a, Hawaii.

While exploring the breathtaking waterfall she had long dreamed of visiting, a tragic accident took her life, leaving her family, friends, and colleagues devastated.

Gianna’s warmth, kindness, and artistic brilliance in the kitchen made her beloved by many, and her absence is deeply felt by all who knew her.

A California native, Gianna was a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend, who held her family close to her heart.

Professionally, she was an extraordinary talent, helping elevate Jeune et Jolie to Michelin-star status with her dedication and innovation.

Beyond her culinary achievements, Gianna’s generosity shone through her volunteer work at animal rescue shelters, where she cared for and supported animals in need—a testament to her compassionate spirit.

The circumstances surrounding Gianna’s passing only add to the sorrow. After her accident, first responders, including the Kauai Fire Department’s Rescue 3 crew, made every effort to save her.

She was airlifted from Makaleha Falls to Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Kauai before being transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.

Despite the tireless work of medical teams, she could not be saved, leaving her loved ones to navigate an unimaginable loss.

As San Diego grieves, an outpouring of love and support continues to flow from the community.

A fundraising campaign has helped alleviate the financial burdens of medical expenses, emergency transport, and funeral arrangements, a reflection of how deeply Gianna was cherished.

“Her light will continue to shine through the lives she touched,” her family shared, finding comfort in the overwhelming support and love from those who knew her.

Though her time was tragically short, Gianna’s legacy as a talented chef and kindhearted soul will be remembered for years to come.
