The kayak fishing community is grappling with profound sadness following the unexpected passing of Ryon Mora, a 38-year-old angler participating in the Bass Angler Magazine (BAM) Kayak Series tournament held on the waters of Lake Almanor on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
What began as a typical tournament morning, with overcast skies and a gentle breeze, tragically unfolded into a scene of immense loss.
At approximately 6:37 a.m., the calm of the early morning was broken by an urgent report received by BAM Tournament Director Michael Bray – an unmanned kayak adrift on the lake.
Swiftly responding to the GPS coordinates, BAM staff, including CEO Mark Lassagne, reached the location and discovered Ryon Mora in the water just five minutes later.
He was wearing his personal flotation device (PFD), a stark reminder of the safety measures he diligently followed.
Despite the immediate and dedicated efforts of the BAM team, who pulled Ryon from the water and initiated CPR while racing to meet emergency responders, he remained unresponsive.
Paramedics arrived at a nearby dock around 6:47 a.m. and tirelessly worked for over 45 minutes in a desperate attempt to revive him. Sadly, their efforts proved unsuccessful.
Authorities from the Plumas County Sheriff’s Department have launched an investigation to determine the cause of this heartbreaking incident.
In the wake of this tragedy, the BAM Tournament Trail made the immediate decision to cancel the event, recognizing the somber atmosphere and the need for the community to grieve.
Further announcements regarding the rescheduling of the BAM Kayak Series will be shared in the coming days.
Ryon Mora was not just a competitor; he was a cherished member of the kayak fishing fraternity, known for his sportsmanship and the bonds of friendship he forged with many.
His adherence to safety precautions during a sanctioned event underscores the unpredictable nature of outdoor pursuits, even when all measures are taken.
The entire Bass Angler Magazine family has extended their deepest sympathies to Ryon’s family and loved ones during this incredibly painful time.
They have called upon the wider community to join them in offering thoughts and prayers as they navigate this profound loss.
As the investigation progresses, further updates will be provided upon official release from the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, ensuring the community remains informed during this difficult period of mourning and remembrance for a respected angler.
