Eagles young gun suffers concussion in training
Harley Reid, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 AFL Draft, has been placed in concussion protocols after suffering a head knock during West Coast’s pre-season training.
The incident occurred in the first week of the Eagles’ pre-season, with Reid, who turned 19 in 2024, taking a precautionary step into non-contact training while recovering.
The club confirmed the news on Thursday, noting that the young star had sustained a minor concussion during a training session on Wednesday.
West Coast’s general manager of football, Gavin Bell, addressed the situation, saying that Reid’s wellbeing was a priority.
“Harley received a minor head knock during training, and we took immediate precautionary measures,” Bell said.
He further added that Reid had spoken with both him and the club doctor, and that the young forward was in good spirits.
However, as per AFL concussion protocols, Reid will now engage in non-contact training as part of his recovery process, with the expectation that he will return to full training next week.
Reid, who impressed in his debut AFL season, played 20 games in 2024, averaging 18.5 disposals, 4 tackles, and 2.2 marks per game.
He also won the prestigious NAB AFL Goal of the Year award, showcasing his talent and skill on the field. As the Eagles prepare for the 2025 season, which kicks off with a home game against Gold Coast on March 16, Reid’s recovery will be closely monitored to ensure he is ready to contribute to the team’s success.
This concussion scare serves as a reminder of the physical demands placed on players, particularly young athletes like Reid, who are still adjusting to the rigors of professional AFL. The club will continue to follow all concussion protocols, prioritizing player safety and long-term health.
