Texas football adds to the defensive front with two key portal pickups

Texas Adds Key Defensive Transfers to Strengthen 2025 Roster

Texas football made significant strides in the transfer portal on December 14, securing two crucial defensive commitments that will help bolster the team’s depth for the upcoming season.

The Longhorns added Cole Brevard, a veteran defensive lineman from Purdue, and Brad Spence, a linebacker with experience from Arkansas.

These two transfers will bring immediate impact to Texas’ defensive front as the team looks ahead to the 2025 season.

Cole Brevard, a graduate transfer, brings with him a wealth of experience from his time at Purdue, where he played for three seasons. After beginning his college career at Penn State, Brevard transferred to Purdue, where he tallied 38 tackles and 9.0 tackles for loss over the last three years.

The Indianapolis native has proven to be a versatile and reliable force on the defensive line, and his move to Texas will certainly add to the team’s strength in the trenches.

Brad Spence, also a transfer from the SEC, has been a standout linebacker at Arkansas. A former three-star recruit, Spence made an immediate impact as a true freshman, playing in all 12 games and registering 16 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, and even a pick-six.

In his second year, he improved upon those numbers, finishing with 54 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Spence’s combination of experience and playmaking ability will be key as he joins the Longhorns’ linebacker corps for 2025.

The commitment of both Brevard and Spence comes at a time when Texas is aggressively strengthening its roster ahead of the 2025 season. Their contributions on the field are expected to play a pivotal role in solidifying Texas’ defense.

While these additions are important, the Longhorns are not done yet, with the transfer portal remaining an active avenue for potential improvements in the coming days.

As Texas prepares for the College Football Playoff quarterfinals against Clemson on December 21, the Longhorns’ coaching staff continues to focus on enhancing the team’s depth and talent.

With key transfers like Brevard and Spence now in the fold, Texas is building a roster that looks ready to compete at the highest level in the years to come.
