Pirates Release Trey Cabbage To Pursue Foreign Opportunity

Pirates Part Ways with Trey Cabbage as He Pursues Opportunity Abroad

The Pittsburgh Pirates have released first baseman/outfielder Trey Cabbage, as confirmed by the MLB.com transaction log.

Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reported that Cabbage plans to pursue a new opportunity in a foreign league, which will provide him with a fresh start and likely a more lucrative deal.

His release creates an opening on the Pirates’ 40-man roster, which now stands at 37 players.

Cabbage, who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros last month, had been vying for a spot on the Pirates’ roster.

Prior to his move to Pittsburgh, the Astros had tried to outright him at the beginning of the offseason, and Cabbage’s chances of making the Pirates’ opening day roster remained uncertain.

Even if he had remained on the 40-man roster, he had one remaining option, meaning he could have spent most of the season in Triple-A, further complicating his situation.

In 2023, Cabbage displayed an impressive power-speed combination with a 30-30 season in Triple-A, posting a .306/.379/.596 line with the Angels. However, his performance in 2024 wasn’t as strong, as he slashed .243/.351/.474 in the minors.

Despite that, he made a career-high 45 appearances in the majors with the Astros. Cabbage’s struggles at the big-league level were evident, as MLB pitchers exploited his tendency to strike out, with his rate nearing 41%. Across 147 career plate appearances in the majors, Cabbage holds a .209/.245/.331 line.

With the potential for a fresh start in a foreign league, Cabbage will look to build on his past success and continue his professional baseball journey overseas.
