Commanders Urged to Sign $79 Million All-Pro Edge Rusher

Washington Commanders Encouraged to Pursue All-Pro Edge Rusher Za’Darius Smith

The Washington Commanders have taken an unusual approach to free agency this offseason, largely ignoring one of the most critical defensive positions—edge rusher.

With last season’s sacks leader, Dante Fowler, leaving for the Dallas Cowboys on a modest one-year, $8 million deal, questions arise about the team’s strategy moving forward.

However, a prime opportunity remains in free agency with veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith still available.

A three-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro, Smith remains a high-impact player despite being 32 years old.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen recently ranked him 14th on his list of the top 25 remaining free agents, highlighting Smith’s versatility and ability to create pressure.

Last season, splitting time between the Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions, he racked up nine sacks and 38 quarterback pressures.

With his ability to line up both on the edge and inside, Smith could provide the Commanders with much-needed defensive flexibility.

A short-term deal in the range of one year, $10 million could be a reasonable investment for Washington.

Smith has built an impressive career since being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015. After four seasons in Baltimore, he signed a lucrative four-year, $66 million contract with the Green Bay Packers, where he enjoyed some of his best seasons. Over the past three years, he’s played for the Vikings, Browns, and Lions, proving he can still produce at a high level despite changing teams frequently. With 24.5 sacks over the past three seasons, including a 10-sack campaign in 2022, Smith remains one of the most effective pass rushers on the market.

The Commanders could also be exploring another avenue—trading for a top-tier edge rusher. The Cincinnati Bengals have given Trey Hendrickson permission to seek a trade, and he would be a game-changing addition for Washington. Hendrickson is coming off a dominant 17.5-sack season and is seeking a deal that could pay him around $35 million per year. However, acquiring him would likely require a first-round pick or multiple Day 2 selections, making the cost significantly higher than signing Smith in free agency.

With the draft approaching, Washington must decide how to address its pass rush concerns. Whether through free agency or a blockbuster trade, the team needs a proven edge rusher to bolster its defense. Adding a player like Smith or making a move for Hendrickson could be the key to strengthening their front line and making a push for success in the upcoming season.
